Reiki FAQ
What is Reiki?
Simply put, Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It also promotes healing. It comes from two Japanese words, Rei and Ki. Rei, as it is used in Reiki, means the wisdom that comes from God or the Higher Power. The word Ki is life energy or universal life force. Together, Reiki can be defined as "spiritually guided life energy." Reiki is a system of energy work that can be used to assist Self-Healing, and can also be used to support the healing of others.
What is a Reiki session like?
Reiki can be done in any position, but generally you will lie down on a bed or table such as a massage table. The person doing Reiki will make sure that you are comfortable and will likely offer pillows to cushion any areas of discomfort. Then, using a series of hand positions, Reiki will begin to work. Many people describe a feeling of warmth or tingling. The Reiki practitioner will either put their hands directly on your body or will hold their hands several inches above the body. Be sure to let the practitioner know if you are uncomfortable with being touched. In addition to the feeling of warmth, most people describe a feeling of deep relaxation. Following Reiki, many people feel relaxed and calm. Others feel energized.
Is Reiki affiliated with a religion?
Reiki is a very spiritual practice but does not conform to any organized religion. Certainly, since the founder of Usui system Reiki was Buddhist, there are strong similarities in the language used to describe Reiki. However, Reiki itself is not affiliated with a religion.
Who does Reiki?
Reiki is practiced in all areas of the world. Although there are different levels of training, the first level or Reiki Level I, is all that is needed to use this universal energy for positive change. Each of the additional levels simply offers fine-tuning and the ability to teach Reiki to others. There are no age restrictions on Reiki, just the requirement that the practitioner is willing to use the Reiki energy for the greatest good.
