Tai Chi
Tai Chi and Health
Tai Chi is also a form of movement with a direct impact on health. Tai Chi utilizes the movement of the body and the concentration of the mind to change the flow of energy or chi throughout the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the flow of chi is essential for good health and well-being.
At Choices Changes Attitudes, instruction includes the basic movements of Yang Style Tai Chi. Students will learn the basic form for Tai Chi. The "form" consists of a series of movements that is performed with attention to the external shape and movement sequence as well as the inner experience, breathing, and visualization.
When practicing Tai Chi for health there are five guiding principles:
- Regulating the Body - Allowing physical relaxation and feeling the balance of the body. This maintains the physical and mental centers and allows blood and chi to circulate.
- Regulating the Breath - Controlling the speed, depth, and quality of the breath is important to relaxation and mental well-being.
- Regulating the Mind - It is believed that the mind is in charge and directs the body to battle against illness.
- Regulating Chi - Allowing the free flow of chi to bring balance and harmony to the mind, body, and spirit.
- Regulating the Spirit - Strengthening the spiritual center through meditation and mindfulness.
